ROBOTICS TEAMS TACKLE COLLEGE FOOTBALL

Robotics Teams Tackle College Football

Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) has teamed up with the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl to showcase and support talented robotics teams across South Florida. Six robotics teams are at work right now, building or modifying existing robots that will compete against each other to kick a field goal. Yes, a robot that can kick field goals! You’re invited to check out the robots up close at the FAU Home football games – November 9 (FIU at FAU) and November 30 (Southern Miss at FAU). Robotics Teams Tackle College Football will be located outside Gate 2 of FAU Stadium at the Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl Field Goal Challenge (picture featured below).

By combining robotics and football, this competition will show that engineering can enrich our lives and provide excitement normally associated with traditional sporting events. According to FIRST Robotics, a leading STEM engagement program for students worldwide, “Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology… FIRST Robotics Competitions are the ultimate sport for the mind.”

Participating Teams

  • Pearl City Cats
  • Police Athletic League
  • Mighty Mechanical Mustangs
  • Tech Tigers
  • Amped Up
  • Owltonomous

“Robotics is a major initiative for FPL with 140 teams currently being sponsored and supported by the company throughout our service area. It is a natural fit with FPL’s longstanding support of education, but also serves a key business function – workforce development. Participation in robotics programs helps students build critical leadership and work-related skills in technology and innovation,” said Maureen Wilt senior education program manager for FPL. “STEM programs like robotics prepare today’s students to pursue careers in science and engineering. In many cases, these programs also help break down barriers and provide more opportunities to traditionally underserved populations.”

Join FPL and cheer on these robotics teams at the FAU home games on Nov. 9 and Nov. 30, 2019. The winning team will be awarded a $5,000 grant and the opportunity to showcase their robot kicking a field goal at the 2019 Cheribundi Boca Raton Bowl on Dec. 21, 2019.
